  15. <p>     DIED. GIOVANNI SPADOLINI, 69, academic, journalist and leading
  16. figure in Italian postwar politics who served as Prime Minister
  17. twice in the 1980s; of stomach cancer; in Rome. Born and educated
  18. in Florence, Spadolini became one of the country's youngest
  19. professors at 25; edited Italy's largest and most influential
  20. newspaper, Corriere della Sera, from 1968 to 1972; and wrote
  21. scores of books. Spadolini entered politics in 1972--he was
  22. once described as a late-blooming "giant cherub"--and maintained
  23. an unsullied reputation for honesty.
