- <p> DIED. GIOVANNI SPADOLINI, 69, academic, journalist and leading
- figure in Italian postwar politics who served as Prime Minister
- twice in the 1980s; of stomach cancer; in Rome. Born and educated
- in Florence, Spadolini became one of the country's youngest
- professors at 25; edited Italy's largest and most influential
- newspaper, Corriere della Sera, from 1968 to 1972; and wrote
- scores of books. Spadolini entered politics in 1972--he was
- once described as a late-blooming "giant cherub"--and maintained
- an unsullied reputation for honesty.
